Carmen (DeRoux) Waldal Utt
She was born Carmen Jane Waldal in Seattle, Wash., on June 14, 1925. Her parents, Elsie DeRoux and Hjalmar Waldal moved three months later to the Juneau area, where her grandfather operated an asbestos mine on Admiralty Island.
In 1942 Utt moved to Anchorage, and graduated from Anchorage High School in 1943. At the end of World War II, the family moved to Palmer, where Utt met her future husband, Ernest Utt, who had come from West Virginia to mine coal for the U.S. Army. They married in Palmer in 1949 and had two daughters, JoAnn and Toni. She also had a homestead in Tok. Utt worked with her daughter Toni in her accounting business, Moonrise Enterprises, in Meadow Lakes.
Family and friends said they will remember Utt for "her sense of humor, her love of travel and her devotion to family and friends. She was always notably respectful and tolerant of individual differences. She was always well aware of what was going on in the world around her, and possessed an opinion of what was right and fair."
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Utt in 1991.
She is survived by daughters JoAnn and Toni of Wasilla, brother Emil Waldal of Palmer, stepbrothers John Brown and Rolfe Holte, half-sister Arden Keeling and sisters from Washington, and many cousins from Washington, Oregon, Reimers of California, DeRouxs of Juneau and Anchorage, her Aunt Cleone DeRoux of Tacoma, many "adopted" daughters, and her high school friend, Dorothy Mathews of Anchorage.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mat-Su, 3051 E. Palmer-Wasilla Highway, Wasilla, AK 99654, or to Sunny Knik Chapel Building Fund, P.O. Box 877670, Wasilla, AK 99687.
Arrangements were made with Valley Funeral Home & Crematory in Wasilla. A celebration of life was held at Sunny Knik Chapel in Wasilla on Saturday.
