Lawrence Wilkie Newman

Retired Navy Commander Lawrence Wilkie Newman, a Wasilla resident, died March 2, 2000, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, after a two-week hospital stay.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, March 10, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Stake Center, 901 E. Bogard Rd., Wasilla. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Fort Richardson National Cemetery at 1 p.m.

Commander Newman was born Nov. 2, 1914, in Salt Lake City, to Robert Marchant and Violet Galbraith (Manning) Newman. After high school he served and retired from the U.S. Navy and worked for the U. S. Weather Service in Anchorage. He was living in Wasilla at the time of his death.

According to his family, Our father loved people and was always concerned about others. He created a life of love and service to the Savior, his family and his friends. He will be greatly missed until we meet again.

Commander Newman is survived by his wife of 63 years, Willie Belle (Sorrells) Newman, of Wasilla; daughters, Christine Marie Edwards, Mayo Lynn Melton, and Billie Jo Traut; son, Michael Lawrence Newman; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements for the family were made by Kehls Palmer Mortuary.
