Elizabeth 'Liz' Vlasta (Blinka) Mize

Longtime Soldotna resident Elizabeth "Liz" Vlasta (Blinka) Mize died peacefully with her family at her side on Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Heritage Place in Soldotna. She was 81.

At her request, no memorial services will be held. Her cremains will be scattered over Cook Inlet and Mount Redoubt.

Mrs. Mize was born June 25, 1918, in Taylor, Texas, and attended public school in Alice, Texas. She attended business college in Corpus Christi, Texas. She moved to Alaska on June 21, 1961, and was a former co-owner of Thunderbird Machine and Welding in Soldotna, as well as former co-owner of Sky Bowl Restaurant in Soldotna. She worked as a special education school bus driver until retiring in 1988. Mrs. Mize was a member of the First Baptist Church of Soldotna and the Order of Eastern Star and Amaranth. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and cake decorating for special occasions.

The family said, "Liz was number nine from a family of 10 siblings. She always enjoyed family get-togethers and there was plenty of room at her table for friends of children or grandchildren or any extended family members who happened to drop by. 'The more the merrier,' she would say.

"In all her years in Alaska, she never got over the awesome beauty of this great state, and if you said, 'Let's go for a ride,' Liz would be the first one in the car. Liz was a very loving, giving person and a friend to all she met in her travels."

Mrs. Mize was preceded in death by her son, Samuel A. Mize; father, Paul Blinka Sr.; mother, Vera Susen Blinka; brothers Charles, Paul, Mac, Jerry and Joe Blinka; and sisters Vera Barton, Lydia Wyatt and Rose Lee Blinka.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jack E. and Barbara Marie Mize of Soldotna; son, Donald F. Mize of Soldotna; daughter, Patricia A. Leach of Soldotna; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Patrick and Mary A. Mize of Soldotna; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Audra R. and Curtis Winsmann of Humble, Texas; grandsons Donald Mize and Sammie Mize, both of Texas, and James J. Leach of Soldotna; sister, H.O. "Pete" Jackson of Kingsville, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, a large extended family in Alaska, Texas and the rest of the Lower 48 and longtime friend Carole Solheim of Anchorage.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Kenai-Soldotna Shrine Club Building Fund, P.O. Box 132, Soldotna, AK 99669.

Arrangements made by Peninsula Memorial Chapels.
