Don L. McGee

Longtime Wasilla resident Don L. McGee, 90, passed over due to natural causes May 15, 2015, while staying at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center.

Don was born May 19, 1924, in Whittier, California, to Lyle and Lucy McGee. He graduated in 1942 from Whittier, California. Don served in World War II in the U.S. Navy Air Corps. Following the war he graduated from the University of Utah as a geologist and was hired by Standard Oil of California. He worked in Trinidad and also Bolivia. Don retired as the Chief Petroleum Geologist for the state of Alaska.

He married Joan Olpin in 1955. They had two sons, Kevin McGee and Christopher McGee. Christopher and Sonja blessed them with four grandchildren, Seth, Cory, Hayley and Connor McGee.

Following his wife’s death, he married Barbara Crump in 2003 and gained a stepson, Joshua Orr. Together, Barbara and Don adopted Jesse, Alex and Isabella.

Don enjoyed fishing, traveling, watching football, and spending time with his family and friends. Don’s family will remember him for his strong compassion he had for them and that he lived his life with integrity and bravery.

A celebration of life is at 1 p.m., May 30, at Kings Chapel, 1701 N. Lucille St. Wasilla. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758515, Topeka, KS 66675, or online at woundedwarriorproject.com.
