Dock W. Jones, Jr.

Long time Alaskan Dock W. Jones Jr., 73, died Oct. 1 at home with his wife and children at his side. He was born on Oct. 23, 1935, in Smithfield N.C. to Dock Watson Jones and Caroletta Creech Jones.

He and his wife Shelby Jean Norris Jones were married on Dec. 5 1954 in Dillon, S.C. They moved to Alaska in May of 1964, and homesteaded on Knik River Road, long before there was a road of any kind. He moved into Palmer in 1988 as his health began to decline.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Jean Jones Mitchell of Freemont, N.C., his father Dock W. Jones of Smithfield, N.C., mother Caroletta Creech Jones also of Smithfield, N.C., and a brother Charles Jones of Durham, N.C.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shelby N. Jones, one son Tony W. Jones, of Palmer, and two daughters Karen C. Provo of Sutton, and Jodi M. Magee of Big Lake, one brother Douglas Jones of Raleigh, N.C. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at the Valley Funeral Home in Palmer on Monday. Visitation will be at 11 a.m., and the service at 1 p.m. Followed by a graveside burial at the Palmer Pioneer Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tony Jones, Tony Jones II, William J. Provo Jr., Ronald C. Hartman Jr., Anthony M. Magee and Mason G. Magee.
