Daniel Sinakok Iyatunguk

Daniel Sinakok Iyatunguk, 76, died March 20, 2009, at home in Shishmaref, sitting next to his beloved wife.

A funeral was Saturday at Shishmaref Lutheran Church.

Daniel was born Oct. 9, 1932, in Shishmaref to Frank and Florence Iyatunguk.

Daniel was the youngest of 10 children. When he was 2 years old, his family moved to Deering and he attended Deering School until the fifth grade. He would go seining for fish in the river.

Daniel joined the Army in his early 20s and received his GED. He went to basic training at Fort Richardson for six months. He was drafted in 1957 and stationed as a paratrooper in Germany from 1957 to 1959. Daniel sang and played violin in a group with his older brother Laban Iyatunguk (guitar), longtime friends Wilbur Karmun (accordion), Jimmy Knox (tub-bass) and Frank Tiepelman (mandolin).

Daniel and Florence were married on July 17, 1972, and they were known for horn doll carving. He was a past member of the Deering and Shishmaref IRA Councils, Shishmaref Lutheran Church Council, mayor on the Shishmaref City Council, and at the time of his death was the chairman of the Elders Committee. He was honored serving the community and helped anyone when they needed help, especially when someone was in need of prayers.

Daniel is survived by his loving wife, Florence; daughters, Pauline, Esther, Nora and Inez Iyatunguk; sons, Verne and Gilford Iyatunguk; and grandchildren, Matthew, Elsie, Sharla, Dylon, Kelsi, Mamie, Daniel, Vivian, Aaron, Kenny, Corben and Colten; Sharon F. Nayokpuk, Frances Eutuk and Sandi Keller, whom he regarded as his daughters; brother, Laban and Irene Iyatunguk Sr.; brothers-in-law, Stewert Davis, Winfred, Delbert and Tommy (Vivian) Obruk; sisters-in-law, Grace (John) Pullock, and Lucy Obruk; and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Daniel was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Rudolph Iyatunguk and Frank Iyatunguk Jr.; sisters Bertha, Alice Karmun, Gladys Iyatunguk, Emma Davis, Dorothy and Clarence Bartholomew, and an infant sibling; nieces, Rebecca Olanna, Elsa Adams, Florence and Gwendolyn Iyatunguk and Johanna Hickerson; and nephews, Bobby and Roger Iyatunguk, Paul Nickolson and Kevin Pullock.
