Henry Stanley Bartos
Soldotna resident Henry Stanley Bartos died Saturday, Oct. 18,
2003, at Heritage Place in Soldotna of natural causes. He was 82.
A private family service will be held at a
later date. Mr. Bartos' ashes will be scattered in the Brower Family Cemetery in
Barrow.
Mr. Bartos was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Niagara
Falls, N.Y. After graduating high school, he served in the Army Air Force from
1942 to 1945. During World War II, he was stationed in Great Britain, also
serving in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Mr. Bartos came to Alaska in 1947 to work on
the DEW (distant early warning) line in Barrow. It was there he met his future
wife, Mattie. They also lived in Fairbanks and Healy before settling in the
North Kenai area in 1957. He was a commercial fisherman and longshoreman for
Crowley Maritime until his retirement in 1977.
In his retirement, Mr. Bartos enjoyed traveling
between Alaska and Hawaii and tinkering in his shops.
"Dad was a generous and loving father. Like
many of his generation, he was devoted to his country and his family," his
family said.
Mr. Bartos was preceded in death by his wife,
Mattie Brower Bartos, and son, Joseph Bartos.
He is survived by his son, James Bartos of
Anchorage; daughters, Katie Lee of Anchorage and Henia Minium and her husband,
Duke, of Soldotna; grandchildren, Henry Lee and his wife, Jacqueline, of
Anchorage and Matthew and Alie Minium of Soldotna; and great-granddaughter,
Kandus Lee, of Anchorage.
