PAY CROSSCUT ON 7 BELOW
Drill on Lower Ester Shows Pay Worth $1.75 to the Square Foot.
CROSS CUT THREE TIMES.
Henry Crook Will Set Up There After Finishing on 8A Below.
Pay, the demonstrated value of which is a dollar 75 per square foot of bedrock
uncovered has been disclosed by the operations of the Keystone drill of Craig,
Estby & Crook on the new Henry crook lay, situated on seven below Ester Creek,
which work is now at an end.
Not content with cross cutting the pastry once, the drill has sunk a series of
holes which cut the pay three times, sinking in all 11 holes in the money and
for out side of it. The shafts put down by the drill on to pay streak gave an
average of $.40 to the whole.
Mr. Crook took the lay on seven below Ester from Jessen and Berry some time ago,
and now that he has demonstrated the value of the tractive ground he is to open,
he plans to install a plant this fall and after sinking a working shaft to block
out the money. In this he will employ a crew of about eight men, although
greatly enlarging the crew next season when hoisting directly into the boxes.
At present the miner is operating on 8A below of Ester, where he is employing 35
and 40 men. When he finishes on 8A below, which will be in about six weeks, he
will move upstream to seven below.

FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED OUT
Smoke From Salmon Curing Operations Was the Cause of the Alarm
After weeks of inactivity, the fire department was called out last night to
attend to an alarm turned in about 10 o'clock for the Phil Nelson house on Fifth
and Kellum. The clouds of smoke rising in the vicinity, however, proved to be
from a smoke house on the premises, where he was curing a supply of dog salmon.

BOB JENNINGS ON HIS WAY
On the Delta last night when she left for Tanana was Bob Jennings, Democratic
candidate for delegate, who is to continue his stump speaking first at Tanana,
then at Ruby and finally at Nome. If there were time left the candidate would
visit the Iditarod, but he has to choose between that camp and Nome, since he
cannot visit both and so has selected Seward Peninsula.
