Named in 1937 by Swedish botanist, Eric Hultén, who proposed the former existence of a land bridge where the Bering Strait exists today. Originally defining "Beringia" as a geographic description, today it describes a vast region between the Kolyma River in the Russian Far East to the Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories of Canada.
