Seated on the eastern side of the Gulf of Alaska, Kodiak Island has been continuously inhabited since 8,000 B.C.  Three different and distinct cultural traditions have been identified by archaeologists.  First European contact came in 1784 when Russian fur trappers founded a Russian settlement at Three Saints Bay, near the present-day village of Old Harbor. Kodiak Island Borough encompasses 6,559 square miles of land and with a population of 13,466 (2004).

Kodiak Island held the first capital of Russian Alaska (Kodiak), which moved to Sitka when Alaska was purchased by the U.S. in 1867. Since the Aleutian Campaign of World War II, several branches of the military have maintained a presence in Kodiak. The 1960s brought growth in commercial fisheries and fish processing. The Borough was incorporated in 1963.
