Located in the Bristol Bay region of southwestern Alaska, the Dillingham Census Area consists of eleven small communities scattered along the northeast edge of Bristol Bay.  Dillingham Census Area covers 18,467 square miles.

The economic base in this census area is highly seasonal and centered primarily on the harvest and processing of Bristol Bay sockeye salmon. There are three onshore processing facilities, and numerous floating facilities east of Dillingham in Nushagak Bay, and several more floating processors that operate near Togiak.

The City of Dillingham is the economic, transportation, governmental, and public service center for western Bristol Bay.

Census 2000 reports the population of the Dillingham Census Area was 4,922.
