Anchorage, the largest municipality in Alaska, is located in the south central region at the head of Cook Inlet.  Anchorage Borough stretches nearly 50 miles from Eklutna to Portage Glacier, covering almost 2,000 square miles – roughly the size of Delaware.

The Greater Anchorage Area Borough was formed on January 1, 1964. By the end of the 1970’s the population of the greater Anchorage area had increased to 184,775, half the population of the entire state. In great part because of this growth, in 1975 the two local governmental entities, the City of Anchorage and the Greater Anchorage Area Borough combined to form a new government - the Municipality of Anchorage. Annexations of the cities of Girdwood and Glen Alps culminated in an election that merged the Borough and City on September 15, 1975. This new political entity stretched from Eklutna and Eagle River in the north to Portage in the south, from the Chugach State Park in the east to Turnagain and Knik Arms in the west, encompassing nearly 1,955 square miles.
